설교문: ‘열심을 내라 Be earnest (Rev.3:14-20)
Jesus Power Church AOG, Fiji, 7th March 2010
By Rev. Peter Eungchul Kim, Dr. Missiology
I. Introduction: Dear children of Trinity God!
(1) God is blessing you all now. His mighty hands are overshadowing this place.
God’s sympathetic eyes are watching us to forgive our sins and mistakes.
Let’s receive all graces of God through this morning service.
Let’s concentrate on God’s voice that requests us to do what He wants.
(2) Today’s message of God is Rev. 3:14-20, its title is God requests us ‘Be Earnest.’
With this title, I will proclaim the word of living God to all of us.
Through this word of God, we will surely get all graces of God ‘to be earnest’.
(3) Dear beloved saints of JPC! ------------Let’s hear the background of today’s scriptures.
First, Revelation is the book Jesus revealed coming Christian country and Christians’ future life to Apostle John on 51 years or 66 years after His ascension into Heaven, who was exiled at Patmos Island.
Second, today’s scripture Rev. 3:14-20 is Jesus requesting word to the church in Laodicea; “You are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other!.... I counsel you….. be earnest, and repent…If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with him, and he with me.”
This requested word of Jesus Christ is the same requesting to us nowdays.
(4) Through today’s scripture, Trinity God shows us 3 directions of our faith;
1st direction of our faith is ‘be hot and be earnest’ (3:15)
2nd direction of our faith is ‘be healed from wrong and sickness’ (3:18)
3rd direction of our faith is ‘open the door of soul and spirit to Jesus’ (3:19-20)
========================================================
II. Then, from now on, we will travel journey of direction of faith in Trinity God.
1. 1st direction of our faith is ‘be hot and be earnest’ (3:15)
(1) In those days, Laodicea was the city in the kingdom of Phrygia in Asia Minor.
This city was built as the gate of Phrygia by the Syrian King Antiochus II in 3rd century BC, and Syrian and Jews from Babylonia were settled there.
(2) At Rome period, Laodicea became the wealthiest city in Phrygia kingdom, because rich soil of Lycus valley was the best pasture for sheep, and its agriculture and commerce was prosperous, Laodicea became the center of banking business. So Laodicea city was very wealthy.
(3) By this very wealth, the zeal of faith of Laodicea church saints gradually was cool off. Finally, their faith life was neither cold nor hot but lukewarm.
(4) At this situation, Jesus Christ the Amen requested like this; Rev.3:15-19, “I know that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other….You say, 'I am rich; I have acquired wealth and do not need a thing.' But you do not realize that you are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind and naked……………... So be earnest, and repent.“
(5) Dear beloved saints of JPC!
Under the wealthy situation, if we keep good faith, then how much we are happy?
But, according to the Bible, on wealthy time there is possibility to lose faith.
So, Moses had already mentioned this point to Israelites in Dt. 6:11-13, “….. when you eat and are satisfied, be careful that you do not forget Yahweh, …..Fear Yahweh your God, serve him only and take your oaths in his name.”
This means Moses requested that when we become rich, don’t lose our faith, rather be earnest and more to serve Yahweh God.
(6) Dear beloved saints of JPC!
In year 2010, let’s do our best to be wealthy person financially and spiritually, but
let’s not to keep lukewarm faith but let’s keep hot faith and earnest faith. – Hallelujah!
(7) If our faith is earnest and hot, Bible says, you are successful person, blessed person;
Why? If we become earnest Christian, it is the same to follow God’s commands;
For example, Rom.12:11 commands Christian to be earnest person, “Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord.”
(8) Once again I suggest you and bless you in Jesus name; even though we become wealthy person, let’s be careful not to lose our zeal of faith but increase our faith more and more. ------- Hallelujah!
2. 2nd direction of our faith is ‘Be healed from wrong and sickness’ (Rev. 3:17-18)
“You say, 'I am rich; I have acquired wealth and do not need a thing.' But you do not realize that you are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind and naked. I counsel you to buy from me gold refined in the fire, so you can become rich; and white clothes to wear, so you can cover your shameful nakedness; and salve to put on your eyes, so you can see.“
(1) Jesus found Laodicea church members are the wrong ones and sick, because they did not realize they are patient - wretched, pitiful, poor, blind and naked.
So, Jesus the Healer Almighty Doctor counseled Laodicea church members healing like as this; to buy from me gold refined in the fire, so you can become rich; --- What this prescription of Jesus the Doctor meant?
(2) At those times, Laodicea city was very famous for 3 fields; 1) first financial wealthy banking business, 2) second was huge spinning and weaving industry, 3) the third was famous medicine salve for eyes to export to overseas.
So, Laodicea city was very proud of these; We are rich, we no need other…….etc….
(3) But Jesus Christ the Healer prescribed that Laodicea Church is not rich by banking abundance but must be wealthy by God’s gold which God uses for refining.
So, Laodicea church must have bought God’s gold – it meant God’s tool & method.
(4) Surely Bible says God’s people do not become wealthy through worldly possession or worldly greatness, but God’s people become wealthy by God’s gold - eagerness to believe in God, and zeal of faith. ---------- Then, JPC what we should do?
Like as Jesus prescription, let’s buy God’s gold - zeal for our faith in 2010.
I bless you in Jesus name, in year 2010 all of us would be earnest warrior of faith.
(5) And, Jesus Christ prescribed Laodicea church members ‘buy white clothes to wear, so you can cover your shameful nakedness’ --- What this prescription meant?
In those days, Laodicea was well-known city to produce black color wool material.
So, they have worn black wool clothes to cover their body and proud of rich of it.
(6) But in view of eyes of Jesus the Doctor, it was shame and sickness, because pride wearing black wool clothe was human pride in eyes of God: So, Jesus spoke; “Dear Laodicea church members! What you have to do is not to cover your body with famous dark wool which your city produces, because even though you do, it is only shame of worldly proud. So you must buy white clothes symbolizing color of God’s righteousness and cover your shameful nakedness with white clothes.”
(7) In Bible, white is one of color of God, and white means God’s righteousness, justice, honesty, purity…etc……….It is why Isa. 1:18 says, “even though our sin is like scarlet, if sin is forgiven by God’s white clothes, sin will be as white as snow.”
(8) Therefore, Jesus the Healer prescribed that members of Laodicea church must not cover their nakedness (unrighteousness) with worldly dark pride wool, but for healing they must buy white clothes and wear it to cover their worldly shame and nakedness.
(9) Then, JPC what we should do? Like as Jesus prescription, we also let’s buy white clothes–righteousness by forgiveness of God --- let’s daily wear white clothes – asking forgiveness and be healed from our shameful unrighteousness. Hallelujah!
I bless you in Jesus name, in year 2010, we all would be righteous warrior of faith.
(10) And, Jesus Christ prescribed Laodicea church members “buy salve to put on your eyes, so you can see.“ --- What this prescription meant?
Salve for eyes means ointment or remedy to heal or soothe eyes.
At those times, Laodicea city was famous of medical school, and was exporting well–known salve for eyes named ‘Phrygia powder’ to overseas.
Jesus the Almighty Doctor found Laodicea church saints were spiritual blind.
So, Jesus prescribed them to buy God’s medicine to heal spiritual blindness.
(11) At a very early period, Laodicea church became one of the chief seats of Christianity (Colossians 2:1 says, “I want you to know how much I am struggling for you and for those at Laodicea…”) --- This means Jesus Christ poured many powers to members of Laodicea Church to do ‘earnest spiritual activity’, but they turned their face away from God’s calling and failed doing mission and church became weak and sick and blind.
(12) Since Laodicea church was physically abundant and safe in finance, it became weak in spirituality, and failed to help people who were spiritually lack, and failed to heal people who were spiritually blind. --- So, church needed medicine – salve.
But unfortunately, Laodicea well-known ‘salve for eyes -Phrygia powder’ could not heal its people’s eyes sickness.
(13) Therefore, Jesus Christ the Healer urged saints of church in Laodicea to buy God’s medicine for eyes and put it on blind eyes –--- then, what is God’s medicine?
Bible says, God’s medicine for healing blind eyes is eagerness and earnestness.
For example, here is Moses case;
Because Moses always was earnest towards God and accompanied with Him, and lived his life by will of God, and all the time obeyed God’s request, God’s salve for eyes always was put on Moses eyes; Bible Dt. 34:7 says, “Moses was a hundred and twenty years old when he died, yet his eyes were not weak nor his strength gone.
(14) Dear saints of JPC!
Like as Jesus prescription to heal spiritual blindness, in year 2010, let’s buy God’s salve for eyes – eagerness and earnestness of faith – and put it on our spiritual eyes.
I bless you in Jesus name God’s earnestness salve for eyes covering you and opening your spiritual eyes widely. ------ Hallelujah!
3. 3rd direction of our faith is ‘Open the door of soul and spirit to Jesus Christ’.
(1) The door in this scripture means the door of our soul and the door of our spirit.
Jesus Christ the spirit always is knocking door of our soul and spirit, “May I come in?”
If we open our soul and spirit, then Jesus comes in, while if not open, Jesus does not come in. ------------- We must respond ‘yes or no’.
Bible prohibits lukewarm attitude or neutral zone in Christian faith life.
Bible strongly urges Christians say ‘yes or no’; James 5:12, “Above all, my brothers, do not swear--not by heaven or by earth or by anything else. Let your "Yes" be yes, and your "No," no, or you will be condemned.”
(2) But unfortunately, because saints of Laodicea church were financial wealthy, their eagerness of faith was cool off, and they kicked out Jesus from them.
Even though Jesus was removed from Laodicea Church, but since Jesus Christ still loves them, He gave Laodicea church one more chance; Rev.3:19-20, “Those whom I love I rebuke and discipline. So be earnest, and repent. Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with him, and he with me.”
(3) Dear disciples of Jesus Christ! Can you hear Jesus voice now? “May I come in?”
I bless you in Jesus name that during year 2010, let’s repent very often, and let’s become the warrior of faith to hear Jesus voice and welcome Him --- Hallelujah!
III. Conclusion – I will close off message of God.
Today we heard three directions of faith which we shall walk on; let’s remember them
1stly, God requests us ‘be hot and be earnest’ (3:15)
2ndly, God requests us ‘be healed from wrong and sickness’ (3:18)
3rdly, God requests us ‘open the door of soul and spirit to Jesus Christ’ (3:19-20)
Most of all let’s keep Eagerness, because, eagerness is furnace to melt all things, eagerness is motor power to lead prayer, eagerness is wings to rise up faith into Heaven, and eagerness is the force of fire to fulfill the promise of God. --- Hallelujah
