(1) We must not forget that God rules over this world. Whatever is happened, is there God. God rules over the world like as his ruling over church.

(2) When God rules over human beings, most important thing God considers is prayer.   Prayer is important one among activities which human being can do. The person who fails to pray fail all to do duty, to serve and to grow spiritual growth, because the method which God help is prayer. The person who does not pray is the same to refuse God’s help. If we do not offer our prayer to God, there is no mind to love God. If we do not pray, vigorous strengths will be dried and finally die. For Christians’ virtues existing, blooming its flower and yielding fruits, we need prayer.

(3) To actualize more noble value rather than individual godliness, we need certainly prayer. If we pray, God begins to work. God made rule His purpose and plan will be fulfilled through our prayer. In view of history, when people prayed, God intervened and fulfilled great things.

(4) Therefore, prayer is one of tools to check God’s work; That is, when certain thing is happening, clear touchstone whether it is God’s work or not is whether people who do the work strongly pray or not. If people use strong power of prayer, that is, if people use the chariot of prayer, God pours overflowing big power and blessings to their works.

(5) By earnest desire of woman like as Hanna who earnestly prayed longing for son, great man like as Samuel comes to the world and can fulfill God’s work. These women give bigger benefit to the church and world rather than any politicians. Persons who born to the world by parents’ prayer can rescue nation in crisis.

(6) If church prays, God’s work is prosperous, and kingdom of God in this world wins the days. But if church does not pray, God’s work falls off and all kinds of evil spread through. God made rule spiritual prosperity comes to us through prayer.

(7) Refusal praying is the same to refuse God. Prayer makes God work, angel work, and people work. Hand of prayer is relayed to God, to angels and people.

(8) Since God is submissive to His law of prayer, by His destined rule, God works among His praying people. Prayer holds God and exercises power of influence to God to work.

(9) Method to mostly use many powers of God is exactly prayer. The most devotional thing to fulfill plan of God is prayer too. If prayer is weak, power of Christ in this world also was weakened, and result of glorious ruling over was appeared belatedly, and God had not executed His sovereignty power.

(10) When God build up personal relationship with human being, He made its tool; it is very prayer. By itself rule of prayer, God is nothing for it but to hear His people’s prayer.

(11) Person who not prays blocks up God’s promise to be fulfilled in this world. Person who prays helps God, but person who not prays disturbs God.

(12) Birds flying in the air submit to law of prayer; when God send Elijah to the Kerith Ravine and commanded “You will drink from the brook, and I have ordered the ravens to feed you there.” When Elijah prayed, God provided food; “The ravens brought him bread and meat in the morning and bread and meat in the evening, and he drank from the brook.” (1Ki.17:4, 6)

(13) Vitality, energy and motive power to do God’s work come from persons only who pray. Jesus Christ entrusted His own church destine to persons who pray. Apostles devoted themselves to prayer and considered prayer is most important work. God did not delegate His important kingdom to persons who not pray, and also He will not entrust His kingdom to person who not pray, because in life of those who not pray, prayer will not mainly work.

(14) Seed of word of God need much nutrition of prayer for its well growth. When seed of word of God abundantly absorb its nutrition of prayer, seed of God’s word fast grows and its root more deeply comes into the ground.

(15) Great leaders who had done successfully God’s work built up their leadership during wrestling of prayer at their room.

(16) Leaders in church must be persons who pray. Prayer must form their character and must be most outstanding personality, because church strength comes from leaders who show the model of excellent prayer. Church leaders must be persons who are deeply indulged into prayer; prayer must form their life and rule over themselves, and their mind and life must be filled with prayer.

(1) Persons who glorified God through keeping church always had done thoroughly prayer ministry; Excellent persons in native or educated power of culture or intellect, persons who were in poor knowledge or native talent, all had managed church by power of prayer.

(2) In human history, if we pull prayer down 2^nd position is the same that we pull God down to the 2^nd position. If we use other method without praying is the same we remove God from this world and solve all things by human power.

(3) If we correctly fulfill God’s work, we must surely pray, because God made that rule. The word in Ac.6:4, “We will give our attention to prayer and the ministry of the word” means Apostles found if God’s word correctly be spread and church grow, then, it is better to give up work rather than giving up prayer. How much strong we pray decide the value of work.

(4) If we do not pray by an excuse busy work, it leads faith into depression and its work will be ruined, because God is not together with workers in works without prayer. In the world, how many people are reducing prayer hours but extending their working hours by Satan’s cunning trick! If we do not pray because of busy time, we easily are disarmament by Satan.

(5) Proclaiming word of God not based by prayer is a useless thing. If Apostles did not pray, their ministry would not have continued. To get big success in proclamation of word of God, we must pray much. Preacher who God use him with mighty right hand is the preacher who prays.

(6) When Apostles put prayer is priority one among many works, they became genuine workers who executes God’s will in the world, and God could work effectively through them.

(7) The big reason why prayer at home is destroyed is not pray because of pretext of busy. This is the reason why godliness at home is destroyed and declined in church.

(1) Persons who do not pray is not proper to fulfill God’s plan, nothing to contribute to God’s kingdom. In this world, the most necessary existence to expand kingdom of God is persons who pray. God use persons who pray.

(2) Even though some satisfy other conditions, if he no pray, he fails. The necessary person to fulfill God’s work is person who is powerful for prayer. The chariot of prayer can rise up to any high place, can open any door, can win at any battle, and can get any kinds of graces.

(3) Our life level is in proportion to level of closet room of prayer. Thing to rise up vitality of life is only heat of closet room of prayer. If we do not pray continually, life is down to below zero temperature.

(4) Person whom God uses is person who prays. In spiritual field, this person lead atmosphere and begin to work big thing and finally yield fruit. If we say in connection with God’s work, person who not prays in God’s church is the same paralyzed organ of body. This person dries vitality and strength in army of God’s kingdom.

(5) Not praying weaken all strengths of soul and spirit, destroys faith and gives up holy life and closes the door of heaven. Fletcher of Madeley (1729-1785 pastor in Madeley England, he called name ‘John Fletcher) testified, “Without prayer, I never made any plan, start to do any work, and not read book, and not had conversation. Without prayer, I never visited someone, not met any visitors.” Sometimes, when he was absorbed into prayer, he overcame the limitation of prayer and entered into high level of prayer. At that time his face was changed similar to the face of angel just as Jesus Christ at Transfiguration Mountain.

(6) Even we are excellent in other filed, if we do not excellent in prayer field, we cannot say our success. All leaders in church must be person who prays. Even though we are very famous person or we get any important position, we must pray.

(7) To fulfill God’s work, we need all people’s help, and if each one pray, its help will be big. If we pray for own self and own necessity, our prayer dies because of close-fistedness, narrowness and selfishness. Prayer must be wide in width, must transcend the limitation of selfishness. If not, our prayer dies. If we want to get to a state of completion of power to overcome selfishness, we must develop power of our prayer for others.

(1) How much strongly Holy Spirit work depends upon our prayer how much we strongly pray. In Old Testament period, leaders must have been prayer people. God’s most revelation to show Himself was through prayer.

(2) Jesus Christ always made efforts without ceasing to pray at the relationship with God and His ministry. Since possibility of Jesus prayer is infinite, possibility of His ministry was also unlimited. Lord our God’s power is unlimited. But because of our short prayer, God’s unlimited power is limited reveled to us and world.

(3) World needs persons who pray to welcome God’s huge power into the world. We all whether we are preacher or layperson must take responsibility and duty to make efforts to pray to fulfill big will of God. If church is not filled with people who pray, church is not wholeheartedly work for God.

(4) Abraham who had successfully done role of leadership was the person who prayed. Wherever he settled his camp, soon he always built altar for God and sacrificed and prayed. The reason why his sacrificed altar was firmly sustained was because of his prayer. Abraham’s prayer altar made his sacrificed altar holy.

(5) God gives us spiritual understanding by the tool of prayer. At any period, God managed his church through people who prayed. If people do not pray, God’s ruling was destroyed.    

(6) Christians must pray for people. The secret which we can live in full of grace is prayer for others. Intercessory prayer becomes the root to give grace to people who intercede. Intercessory prayer is the utmost devotion which Christian can do. We must care people and understand their situation and pray for them. And after praying them, we must give our listening to them with compassion, sympathy and concerns.

(7) If our prayer is changed much, much change will come to our life. If our prayer is more changed, glorious things and vision of Heaven will be revealed to us much.

(8) ‘Medicine healing not to pray’ is ‘to pray’. ‘Medicine healing little praying’ is ‘to pray much.’ We can get necessary everything for our benefit through praying.

(9) If we pray, God comes to us like supporting army and pours His peace and safety on us. If we pray, God comes to us and His presence and peace upon us. If we want to get peace of God, we must not pray halfway, but we must persistently long for and strongly pray with all hearts to blossom flower of thanks. Then, God’s big peace will flow over us like as not drying spring water.

(10) Short and superficial prayer results declining godliness. If our faith is fallen off, we pray shortly and superficially. This kind of prayer is the sign we start to far from God, and if we continually pray shortly and superficially, we are more far from God. If you are the person who prays shortly but deeply, you need to train to pray long time, because if we make praying time longer, like miracle, our faith is fired up again.

(11) Prayer opens the door to apply God’s promises into our life, and remove hindrance blocking its application process, and get beautiful fruits of God’s promise. Example: God’s promise was given to Abraham and his descendants, but many barren bellies and several hindrances block its fulfillment. But Abraham and his descendants’ prayer helped to remove hindrance and to build big road for promise and to easily and fast fulfill promise of God.

(12) The prayer which is proper to will of God displays its power, because God’s will and human prayer bring combination of all powerful strength and almighty strength. Prayer has powerful strength to make God entering into human work.

(13) Church and angel make several works in heaven and on earth fulfilled by their helping prayer of saints; when Angel in Revelation 8:8 poured fire ignited by prayer, this thing happened, “there came peals of thunder, rumblings, flashes of lightning and an earthquake.” Like as this, prayer is strength to happen awesome, surprised and suffered happenings.

(14) Hot prayer brings power of the Holy Spirit. Prayer is the chariot of victory of the Holy Spirit. If we do not pray, the fire of the Holy Spirit is off. Even though Holy Spirit came, if not pray, the fire of Holy Spirit is off. To where atmosphere of prayer is, strong realization of sin exists and deep repentance is arisen up.

(1) God’s ministers and workers are the people called by God to do noble duty. Therefore they must take 1stly responsibility for God’s people. Go gave God’s ministers the mission to lead spiritual Israelites into kingdom of heaven from this world.

(2) Therefore God’s ministers must look up God and continually seek the wisdom and power and help of God. This great work is done by prayer. How much healthy or wealthy God’s community is depends upon God’s ministers.

(3) The top tool which God’s ministers should prepare is the chariot of prayer. They must be an expert of prayer. The God’s ministers who not pray are not ministers of God. God’s ministers who not prayer probably knew wrongly own mission or make God to be sad through giving discouragement. What is the first prior qualification of God’s ministers is prayer.

(4) At the early days, why Methodist preachers succeeded was the reason they knew the technique to communicate with God. They were not educated people, and they had many limitations, but they earnestly prayed, they succeeded doing God’s big works. “Person who does not plow at the closet room (prayer) harvests nothing.”

(5) The most important factor at proclaiming gospel is prayer.    Martine Luther said, “Christian job is praying.” Jesus Christ had learned two techniques; 1^st was ‘carpenter technique, 2^nd was technique of prayer.’ The person who learned well technique of prayer will be a skilled worker at site of God’s work, because he understood the secret to do God’s work as the Christian.

(6) “Continually pray” is the supreme order to God’s ministers in this age. If prepare at kneel down, gracious Holy Spirit will come to word of God like waterfall.

(7) Apostle John wrote ‘the event of disciples’ baptism of Holy Spirit’ in 1^st Jn. 2:20, “you have an anointing from the Holy One, and all of you know the truth.” He mentioned ‘anointing from Holy One’. Therefore, what God’s ministers must long for is ‘Anointing from the Holy One.’      

(8) Revival without prayer is ‘building on the sand.’ True revival comes after some period prayer. The revival which Holy Spirit gives rise up together from ‘the preaching altar and congregation’, and is spread to all ministers and saints by the will of God.

(9) Jesus separated 3 persons from ‘other disciples’, because three were strong in prayer. These three – Peter, James and John – were more concerned to prayer. They prayed more than other disciples.

(10) To attain the top level of faith, prayer is indispensible. God reveals His own things by the Holy Spirit to people who pray. To build firmly and strongly up kingdom of God in this world, absolutely we must pray. The first ministers of God (Apostles) at the early Church devoted themselves to prayer ministry.

(11) When pray only, preacher’s sermon gives congregation benefits, because God’s power and strength enter into sermon. When the prophet Isaiah waited front of God’s throne and confessed and prayed, angel touched his lips ‘with tongs from the altar’.

(12) If we pray, always burning fire comes upon us. This fire loose tight stiff tongue, and open mouth of witness of gospel, open widely big door of doing good things.

(1) God’s minister without passing a closet prayer room cannot give people religious benefit. But God’s ministers and workers who earnestly enter into the prayer room and diligently come to the preaching altar are blessed persons. If do not pray at secrete place with God, prayer is weak and godliness life also weak.

(2) The school where we learn praying is the closet prayer room only. If we pray well at the closet prayer room, then, we can do also well at the altar. If God’s ministers and workers are far from prayer room, his prayer at the altar is cool, powerless, and becomes formal prayer only.

(3) We can live outward noble religious life without prayer. But nobility and godliness quiet different. Godliness is given to us through prayer only. God’s ministers and workers can teach without prayer. But that teaching without prayer is different level from proclaiming word of God.

(4) The top condition for success of kingdom of God is prayer. If God’s ministers, workers and saints pray, offensive power comes to the gospel of Christ. At this moment, ‘the chariot of prayer’ goes forward against enemy camp.

(5) Missionary who charges the difficult and important task at mission site must prepare the equipment of ‘Chariot of Prayer’. Prayer and missionary must go together. If we pray, works Jesus Christ who sitting down at the right hand of Yahweh God in Heaven.      

(6) Therefore, O god’s ministers and God’s workers! “Learn how to pray! Kneel down in front of God!” Success of God’s ministers and workers depends upon prayer. Sermon goes together with hand of prayer. For getting grace from sermon, preacher must pray, and saints must pray too. Prayer is the most great work and most noble work.

(7) For sermon which God accept, sermon which gives benefits to people, God’s ministers and workers must truly pray with lamentation, tears and godly fearing. Sermon which gives life comes from prayer. Let’s preach praying!

(8) God wants that armed ministers and workers of God comes out. These people come out prayer only. Hands without prayer and lips without prayer cannot display any life power and charm at proclaiming gospel. Politician, school teacher and lecturer need intellectual power only, but God’s ministers and workers need ‘spirituality’ which comes from prayer.

(9) Prayer maximizes the effect of word of God. Hot prayer makes word of God hot, if pray, then word of God becomes strong and anointing upon word, and word stays long time inside mind of people. In Lk. 24:49, Jesus said to disciples, “…stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on High.”---- Jesus requested them to pray till wearing power from High. ‘Power from on High’ means ‘anointing from God’. This means ‘spiritual power’. God’s workers and ministers absolutely need this ‘Spiritual Power’. When God’s ministers keep this spiritual power, message of God can get wings and can give people life power; Even though they are lack of human talents or qualifications, if they keep spiritual power, God’s workers surely succeed.

(10) ‘Power from on High’ wakes up sinners and saints’ soul, touches them to realize their sins and impresses them. ‘Anointing from Holy One’ keeps sermon not to dry, prevent sermon from flowing superficially, and grant authority of sermon. Because of this anointing from God, person who proclaims gospel is different from lecturer, speaker in the world.

(1) If we do not ask prayer to other and do not receive other prayer, spiritual source is dried. God’s ministers and workers clearly ask church pray for them.

(2) Nowadays saints pray, God’s ministers and workers can open mouth like as Apostles and boldly make efforts to proclaim gospel. God’s ministers and workers who receive support of saints’ prayer can get message from God and that message can be powerfully delivered to saints. For proclaiming gospel, prayer must run first for preparing the way of gospel; God’s ministers and workers’ prayer and saints’ prayer together.

(3) Like as racing game, to be winner, he must get much energy. For God’s word being fast spreaded, God’s ministers and workers need much spiritual energy from themselves’ prayer and saints’ prayer. If saint prays, God’s ministers can preach word of God more strongly and competently. If saints not pray, race of word of God meet big hindrance.

(4) If pray, all blocks and hindrance against word of God at altar is removed. If there is ‘chariot of prayer, word of God goes rapidly forward to saints, and come into deep heart of saints.

(5) Prayer gives wings to God’s ministers’ word of God.     If saints pray for God’s ministers and workers, they can keep righteous life, and prepare well message of God. If saints pray for word of God, Holy Spirit from High leads atmosphere of altar, and removes hindrance blocking word, and guides word of God to be delivered to saints.

(6) Because layperson who prays for God’s ministers sustain both sides of spiritual electric line, God’s power can enter into the people’s mind through spiritual electric line.

(7) If word is delivered to saints who not pray, word falls down in front of saints’ feet. Preacher’s message cannot have power to far to saints who not pray. Because saints not pray for word of God, God’s word cannot enter saints’ heart and no power, no grace, no impression to saints. Therefore, to get grace form word of God, God’s ministers and saints must together strongly pray and pray and pray.

(8) Word and prayer must go together. Because God’s ministers are spiritual watchman to warn danger to God’s people, and God’s messenger to rebuke and encourage, shepherd to protect sheep

(1) 기도의 골방을 거치지 않은 사역자는 사람들에게 신앙적 유익을 줄 수 없다. 그러나 골방에서 설교단으로, 설교단에서 골방으로 부지런히 다니는 사역자는 복되다. 은밀한 장소를 찾아 기도하지 않는다면, 기도가 약해질 뿐 아니라 경건의 삶도 약해진다.

기도를 배울 수 있는 학교는 오직 골방뿐이다. 골방에서 기도를 잘 드리면, 강단에서도 기도를 잘 할 수 있다. 사역자가 기도의 골방을 멀리하면, 강단에서의 그의 기도는 차갑고 무기력하고 형식적인 기도가 된다.

(2) 기도없이 겉으로 품위있는 종교생활을 할 수는 있다. 그러나 품위와 경건은 전혀 다른 것이다. 경건은 오직 은밀한 기도를 통해서만 주어진다. 사역자가 기도없이도 가르칠 수 있다. 그러나 이런 가르침은 말씀 선포와 차원이 다르다.

(3) 하나님 나라의 성공을 위한 최고의 조건은 기도이다. 사역자들이 기도하고 성도들이 기도하면, 그리스도의 복음에는 공격적인 능력이 생긴다. 그때에 ‘기도의 불병거’가 적진을 향해 전진한다.

(4) 선교 현장에서 어렵과 막중한 사명을 감당해야 할 선교사들이 반드시 지참해야 할 장비는 ‘기도의 불병거’ 이다. 기도와 선교사는 함께 가야 한다. 우리가 기도하면, 하늘 보좌에 앉으신 하나님과 보좌 우편에 앉으신 그리스도 예수께서 일하신다.

(5) 오, 사역자들이여! 기도하는 법을 배워라. 하나님 앞에 무릎을 꿇어라. 사역자의 사역성공은 기도에 달려 있다. 설교는 기도와 손을 잡고 함께 가야 한다. 기도는 가장 위대하고 고상한 일이다.

(6) 하나님께서 받으시는 설교, 사람들에게 유익을 주는 설교를 하려면, 정말로 사역자가 통곡과 눈물과 경건한 두려움으로 기도해야 한다. 생명을 주는 설교는 생명을 주는 기도에서 나온다. 기도하면서 설교하자.

(7) 하나님께서는 특히 무장된 사역자들이 나오기를 원하시는 데, 이런 사역자들은 기도를 통해서만 생긴다. 기도하지 않는 손과 기도하지 않는 입술이 전하는 복음은 아무런 생명력과 매력을 발휘할 수 없다. 정치가, 학교 선상, 강사에게는 지적 능력만 있으면 되지만, 사역자에게는 기도를 통해 주어지는 ‘영성’ 이 있어야 한다.

(8) 기도는 말씀의 효과를 극대화 한다. 뜨거운 기도는 말씀을 뜨겁게 만들어 주고, 기도하면 말씀이 강해지며, 말씀에 기름 부음이 임하고, 사람들의 마음에 말씀이 오래도록 남게 된다.

(9) 눅 24:49절에서, 예수께서 제자들에게 “너희는 위로부터 능력을 입히올 때까지 이 성에 유하라” 하셨다. ‘위로부터 임하는 능력’은 ‘거룩한 분(하나님)의 기름부음’ 이다. 곧 영적능력을 말한다. 이 영적능력은 하나님의 사자가 반드시 소유해야 할 지극히 중요하고 필수적인 힘이다. 이 힘을 소유할 때 비로소 그는 그의 메시지에 날개를 달고 그의 말씀 전파에 생명력을 불어 넣을 수 있다. 인간적인 재능이나 자질이 부족하다 할지라도 이 영적능력이 있으면, 반드시 성공한다.

(10) ‘위로부터 임하는 능력’은 죄인과 성도의 영혼을 일깨우고 자극하고 죄를 깨닫게 하고 감동시킨다. ‘거룩한 기름부음’은 설교가 메마르지 않게 지켜주고, 피상적으로 흐르지 않게 막아주고, 설교에 권위를 부여한다. 이 기름부음이 있기 때문에, 복음 전파자는 세상의 강사나 연사와 구별된다.

(1) 기도의 부탁을 강조하지도 않고 기도의 지원을 받아내지도 못하면, 영적 생명의 원천이 말라 버린다. 사역자들은 하나님의 교회에게 분명히 기도를 부탁해야 한다.

(2) 오늘날 성도들이 기도하면, 사역자들도 사도들처럼 입을 열고 수고하여 복음의 메시지를 담대히 진실되게 전할 수 있다. 기도의 지원을 받는 사역자는 하나님께 제대로 메시지를 받게 되며, 그 메시지를 역시 기도를 통해 능숙하게 전달하게 된다. 복음이 전파되려면 기도가 먼저 달려가 길을 예비해야 하는데, 사역자의 기도뿐만 아니라, 교인들의 기도도 달려가야 한다.

(3) 경주하는 사람이 승리하려면 최고의 에너지를 공급받아야 하듯이, 주의 말씀이 신속히 퍼져나가려면 기도를 통해 최고의 영적 에너지를 공급받아야 한다. 교인들이 기도하면 사역자는 더욱 강하고 능숙하고 성공적인 말씀 선포를 할 수 있다. 교인들이 기도하지 않으면 주의 말씀이 달음질하는 데 큰 방해가 된다.

(4) 기도하면, 강단에서 전파된 말씀의 달음질을 가로막는 장애물이 제거된다. 기도의 불병거가 있으면 주의 말씀은 파죽지세로 전진한다. 기도의 불병거가 있으면 설교자의 메시지는 족쇄를 부수어 버리고 죄인들과 성도들의 심령 깊숙하 곳까지 단숨에 돌진한다.

(5) 불신앙과 기도하지 않으면 어떤가? 교인들의 불신앙과 기도하지 않기 때문에, 사역자가 손이 묶여서 영혼구원과 성도들의 교화에 실패하는 일들이 일어날 수 있다. 사역자 자신이 기도하지 않으면 그는 스스로의 손을 묶는 것이기 때문에 그의 가르침은 아무런 열매를 맺지 못한다. 만일 교인들이 기도하지 않으면 사역자가 타격을 입고 아무 도움을 받지 못하기 때문에 사역의 실패자로 전락한다.

(6) 기도는 사역자의 말씀에 날개를 달아 준다. 사역자를 위한 기도는 사역자의 의로운 생활을 유지할 수 있게 하고, 메시지를 더욱 잘 준비하게 한다. 교인들이 기도하면 지극히 높으신 분의 성령께서 분위기를 주도하시고, 복음의 진보를 방해하는 장애물을 제거해주시며, 주의 말씀이 달려갈 탄탄대로를 펼쳐주신다.

(7) 사역자를 위해 열심히 기도하는 평신도는 영적 전선을 양쪽에서 지탱해 주기 때문에, 이 전선을 타고 하나님의 능력이 사람들의 마음 속에 파고 들 수 있다.

(8) 기도하지 않는 교인들에게 말씀을 전하면 사역자의 입에서 나온 말은 그의 발 아래로 바로 떨어지고 만다. 그의 메시지는 멀리까지 나아갈 힘이 없다. 분위기가 차갑고 비우호적이며 불리하기 때문에 그의 메시지는 청중의 마음속까지 달려가지 못한다.  사람들의 관심을 모으고 생명을 주고 영혼을 구원하는 메시지가 나오려면, 사역자와 청중이 모두 기도해야 한다.

(9) 말씀과 기도는 함께 가야 한다. 사역자는 위험에 대해 경고하는 영적 파수꾼이고, 책망과 권면하는 하나님의 사자이며, 양들을 보호하는 목자임으로, 사역자에게는 자기가 섬기는 사람들의 기도 지원이 절실히 필요한 것이다.

(10) 하나님의 복음을 온전히 선포하기 위해서는 전투에 임하는 자세로 임해야 한다. 깊은 확신과 강한 의무감과 온전한 용기에서 나오는 것이어야 한다.  바울은 자기가 죄 짓는 것을 제외하고는 무슨 일이라도 행할 수 있는 담대한 사람이 될 수 있도록 기도해 달라고 교인들에게 부탁했다. 그들의 바울을 위해 기도할 때 그의 말문이 열렸고, 두려움에서 벗어나 거룩한 용기로 충만하여 말씀을 담대히 전할 수 있었다.

(11) 사탄은 종종 두려움을 무기로 삼아 사역자를 괴롭히는데, 교인들은 사역자가 이런 두려움을 극복할 수 있도록 기도로 도와야 한다. 기도할 때 우리는 영의 눈이 열려 하늘의 불말과 불병거가 나를 호위하고 있음을 보게 된다 (왕하 6:17). 기도의 불병거는 두려움을 쫓아 버리고 두려움의 속박에 갇힌 설교자를 해방시킨다.

(12) 마귀는 시대가 바뀌어도 바뀌지 않는다. 인간의 본성 또한 바뀌지 않는다. 복음을 전하는 사역자 혼자서는 자기의 사명을 감당할 수 없다. 그러므로 우리는 영적 이스라엘의 지도자들을 위해 기도해야 한다. 반드시 그래야 한다. 그럴 때 그들은 큰 용기를 얻어 하나님의 말씀을 담대히 전할 것이다.

(1) Samuel Rutherford (1600-1661, 스코틀랜드의 장로교 신학자)는 “나는 골방에서 천사와 씨름하여 이겼습니다” 라고 하였고, Henry Martyn (1781-1812, 인도에서 활동한 영국 선교사)는, “나는 하나님께서 내게 시련을 허락하신 목적이 내 안에서 이루어지기를 날마다 기도한다. 또 이런 시련으로 인해서 내가 평생 더욱 겸손하게 하나님만 의지하게 되기를 기도한다”고 일기에 기록했다.

(2) David Brainerd (1718-1747, 인디언들을 위한 선교사)는, 인디언들의 말도 모르면서 혼자 깊은 숲 속으로 들어간 그는 날마다 모든 시간을 기도에 투자했다. 그의 일기 일부이다. “…나는 잠시라도 하나님 없이 시간을 보낼까 봐 두려웠다. 나는 한 순간도 예외 없이 하나님과 살고 싶다….나는 매 순간을 하나님과 함께 보내고 싶다는 갈망에 사로 잡혔다. 하나님께서는 계속 내게 말로 다 표현할 수 없는 인자하심을 베푸셨다… 정오에 나는 하나님을 닮아 거룩하게 되기를 갈망했다. 그렇게 되는 것이 유일한 소원이다….저녁 무렵 나는 은밀히 기도하는 중에 많은 은혜를 받았기 때문에, 내 영혼은 저 하늘나라, 하나님의 복된 낙원에 이르기를 갈망했다.”

David Brainers는 30세에 세상을 떠났다. Payson (1783-1827, 미국 회중교회 설교자), Robert Myrry McCheyne (1813-1843, 스코틀랜드 목사), Jonathan Edwards (1703-1758, 미국 대각성 운동을 일으킴) 모두 Brinerd의 전기를 읽고 감명을 받았다. Jonathan Edwards는 이런 고백을 하였다. “나는 브레이너가 우리 집에서 죽음을 맞이하도록 인도하신 하나님께 찬양을 드렸다. 그가 우리 집에 머물렀기 때문에 나는 그의 기도와 뜨거운 헌신을 보고 그의 모범에 감동을 받았다.”

(3) William Carvosso 는 현대 최고의 신앙적 모범 중 하나를 남겼다. 그의 몇 가지 말들이다. “나는 예수님을 더욱 닮기를 원한다….오 하나님! 저의 영혼이 하나님을 갈망합니다….오 하나님! 하나님의 임재와 영광으로 계속 충만한 것 외에는 다른 방법이 저에게 없습니다….어느 날 산책을 나가서 큰 길을 걷고 있었는데, 갑자기 무엇엔가 이끌린 듯이 곁길로 들어서게 되었다. 마음의 감동을 못이긴 나는 하늘을 지붕 삼아 무릎을 꿇고 기도했다. 기도를 오래 하지 않았을 때 하나님께서 강력하게 임하셨다. 나는 소리를 질렀다…..나를 압도하는 하나님의 영광이 너무 무거워 내 몸이 버틸 수 없다고 느낀 나는 ‘주여, 이제 그만 손을 거두어주소서’라고 말씀 드렸다. 이런 영광스런 세례 가운데 내 마음 속에는 ‘내가 너를 구속의 날까지 인쳤노라’라는 말씀이 형언할 수 없는 능력으로 임하였다.”

(4) Jonathan Edwards (1703-1758, 미국 대각성 운동을 일으킴)의 일기 일부를 보자. “나는 소년 시절에 하루 5번씩 은밀히 기도했다…….언젠가 나는 건강을 위해 말을 타고 숲 속으로 들어갔다. 한적한 곳에 이르렀을 때 하나님을 묵상하고 기도하기 위해 말에서 내렸다. 그런데 내게 특별한 일이 일어났다. 하나님의 아들 예수 그리스도의 영광이 내게 보였다. 온유하고 겸손하신 그 분의 모습이 보였다. 이런 은혜가 하늘 위에서도 보였는데, 하늘 위에서는 지극히 크게 보였다. 그리스도께서는 형언할 수 없을 정도로 높은 분으로 보이셨다. 이런 체험이 약 1시간 정도 지속되었다. 그 시간의 대부분 내 눈에서는 눈물이 홍수를 이루었고, 나는 큰 소리로 울었다. 나는 애 영혼의 열정이 텅 비거나 無化 되어 먼지 속에 묻힌다고 느꼈다.”

(5) Lady Maxwell 은 존 웨슬리와 동시대 사람으로 감리교가 배출한 훌륭한 신앙인이었다. 그녀의 삶은 기도의 삶이요, 하나님을 위한 성별된 삶이요, 다른 사람을 위해 복을 빌어 주는 삶이었다. 멕스웰 여사는 규칙적인 생활 습관을 지닌 것으로 유명하다.

<그녀는 새벽 4시 일어나 5시에 새벽예배를 드리고, 아침식사 후에는 가족예배를 드렸으며, 11-12시까지는 중보기도를 드렸다. 저녁때까지의 시간은 독서와 심방과 선행을 하였다. 저녁시간에는 독서를 했고, 잠자리에 들기 전에는 가족을 위한 예배를 드리거나 하나님의 은혜를 찬양하였다>

(6) John Flether 는 감리교 창시자 존 웨슬리와 동시대 살았고, 그와 깊은 관계를 맺었다. 그의 삶 전체는 쉬지 않는 기도의 삶이었다. “나는 자리에 앉았다 일어날 때에는 언제나 하나님께 마음을 향하게 한 후에 일어난다.” 그의 한 친구는 이렇게 말했다. “내가 플레처를 만나면 그는 항상 내게 ‘자네는 지금 기도하고 있는가?”를 물었다. “그 자리에 없는 누군가의 행실이 좋지 않다는 애기가 나오면, 그는 ‘그 사람을 위해 지금 기도하자’고 말했다.” 전해지는 말에 의하면, 그가 기도하면서 내뿜는 숨결 때문에 그의 골방 벽에는 얼룩이 생겼다고 한다.

(1) 기도하지 않는 사람들은 하나님의 계획을 이루는 데 적합하지 않고, 하나님 나라에 아무런 기여를 할 수 없다. 이 땅에서 하나님 나라를 확장하는 데 가장 필요한 존재는 기도의 사람들이다. 하나님께서는 기도하는 사람들을 쓰신다.

(2) 다른 것을 다 갖추었다 하드래도, 기도가 없는 사람은 실패한다. 하나님의 일을 이루는 데 필요한 사람은 기도에 능한 사람이다. 기도의 불병거는 아무리 높은 곳이라도 다 오를 수 있고, 어떤 문이라도 열 수 있고, 어떤 싸움에서라도 승리할 수 있으며, 어떤 은혜라도 다 받을 수 있기 때문이다.

(3) 우리 삶의 수준은 기도의 골방의 수준에 비례한다. 삶의 활력을 끌어 올리는 것은 오직 기도의 골방의 열기이다. 계속 기도하지 않으면, 삶은 영하로 얼어버린다. 기도하는 사람의 삶이 어떠냐에 따라 기도의 분위기와 기도의 능력이 달라진다.

(4) 하나님이 들어 쓰시는 사람은, 기도하는 사람이다. 영적 분야에서 이런 사람은 분위기를 주도하고 큰 일을 시작하고 결국 열매를 맺는다. 하나님의 나라의 일과 관련 지어 말할 것 같으면, 하나님의 교회에서 기도하지 않는 사람은 마치 신체의 마비된 기관과 같다. 이런 사람은 하나님 나라 군대의 활력과 힘을 좀 먹는다.

(5) 기도하지 않는 것은 영혼의 모든 힘을 약화시키고 신앙을 파괴하고 거룩한 삶을 포기하고 하늘 분을 닫아 버린다. Fletcher of Madeley (1729-1785 영국 매들리의 교구목사 ‘ 존 플레처’ 라고 불린다), “기도 없이 그는 어떤 계획도 세우지 않았고, 어떤 일도 시작하지 않았다. 기도 없이는 책을 읽지도 않았고, 대화를 나누지도 않았다. 기도 없이 누군가를 방문하지 않았고, 방문객도 받지 않았다. 때때로 그는 평상시의 기도의 한계를 벗어나 높은 기도의 경지에 오른 것처럼 보일 정도로 간구에 몰두했는데, 그럴 때 그는 변화산에서의 주님처럼 얼굴의 분위기가 바뀌어 마치 천사의 얼굴처럼 변했다.”

(6) 다른 분야에서 아무리 탁월하다 할지라도 기도에서 탁월하지 못한다면 결코 성공할 수없다. 교회에서 지도자로 일하는 사람들은 모두 기도하는 사람들이어야 한다. 아무리 위대한 사람도, 아무리 중요한 직책을 맡은 사람도 반드시 기도해야 한다.

(7) 하나님의 일을 이루려면 모든 사람들의 도움이 필요하며, 각 사람들이 기도하면 도움의 크기가 커진다. 자기와 자기의 필요를 위해서만 구하는 기도는 인색함과 옹색함과 이기심 때문에 죽고 만다. 기도는 폭이 넓어야 하고 이기심의 한계를 초월해야 한다. 그렇지 못하면 죽고 만다. 자신을 위해 기도할 수 있는 능력이 완성의 경지에 이르려면, 다른 사람들을 위해 기도하는 능력으로 발전해야 한다.

(1) 성령님이 얼마나 강력하게 임하시느냐는 우리의 기도가 얼마나 강력하냐에 좌우된다. 구약시대의 지도자들 역시 기도의 사람이어야 했다. 하나님께서 자기 자신을 나타내신 최고의 계시는 기도를 통해 이루어졌다.

(2) 예수 그리스도는 하나님과의 관계에 있어서나 자신의 사역에 있어서, 끊임없이 기도에 힘쓰셨다. 예수님의 기도의 가능성이 무한했기 때문에 그 분의 사역의 가능성도 무한했다. 주 우리 하나님의 능력에는 제한이 없다. 우리의 적은 믿음과 약한 기도 때문에 그 분의 능력이 제한적으로 나타날 뿐이다.

(3) 하나님의 지극히 큰 능력이 이 땅에 임하도록 기도하는 사람들이 필요하다. 하나님의 큰 뜻을 이루기 위해 힘쓰고 애써야 할 책임과 의무는 설교자이든, 평신도이든 동일하게 져야 한다. 교회의 회중석이 기도하는 사람들로 가득 차지 않는다면, 교회는 하나님을 위해 온전히 일하는 것이 아니다.

(4) 하나님의 큰 뜻을 이루는 데 지도자적 역할을 감당했던 아브라함은 특별히 기도의 사람이었다. 어디에서든 장막을 치고 일정 기간 머물 때면, 아브라함은 항상 제단을 쌓고 희생과 기도를 드렸다. 아브라함의 희생의 제단이 견고히 설 수 있었던 것은 그의 기도의 제단 때문이었다. 아브라함의 기도 제단은 그의 희생의 제단을 거룩하게 했다.

(5) 하나님께서는 기도를 수단으로 하여 우리에게 영적 깨달음을 주신다. 어떤 시대이든 간에 하나님께서는 기도하는 사람들을 통해 교회를 다스리셨다. 사람들이 기도하지 않으면, 그 분의 통치도 무너졌다.

(6) 그리스도인들은 사람들을 위해 기도해야 한다. 우리가 더욱 충만한 은혜 속에 살 수 있는 비결은, 다른 사람들을 위해 기도하는 것이다. 중보기도는 그 중보기도를 하는 사람에게 은혜를 전달해주는 통로가 된다. 중보기는 하나님께서 명하신 고귀한 일로서 그리스도인이 할 수 있는 최고의 헌신이다. 우리는 사람들을 돌보고 그들의 입장을 이해해 주고, 그들을 위해 기도해 주어야 한다. 또 기도해 준 이후에도 그들을 향한 동정과 긍휼과 자비와 관심을 항상 기울여야 한다.

(7) 우리의 기도가 더 많이 변화된다면, 우리의 삶 역시 많은 변화가 일어날 것이다. 우리의 기도가 너 많이 변화된다면, 영광스러운 것들과 하늘의 환상이 우리에게 더욱 많이 임할 것이다.

(8) ‘기도하지 않는 병’을 치료하는 약은 ‘기도하는 것’이다. ‘적게 기도하는 병’에 대한 치료약은 ‘많이 기도하는 것’ 이다. 우리는 우리의 유익을 위해 필요한 모든 것을 기도를 통해 얻을 수 있다.

(9) 우리가 기도하면 하나님께서 괴롭고 답답하고 낙심한 우리의 심령에 지원군처럼 찾아 오시어 온전한 평안과 안전함을 부어 주신다. 우리가 기도하면 하나님께서 찾아 오시며, 그 분의 임재와 평강이 임한다. 하나님의 평강을 얻으려면 기도를 하는 둥 마는 둥 해서는 안 된다. 온 힘을 바쳐 끈질기게 간구하고 감사의 꽃을 피워야 한다. 그렇게 할 때 하나님의 평강이 우리의 마음과 생각을 지켜 조금도 흔들림이나 두려움이 없게 하실 것이며, 결코 마르지 않는 샘물처럼 큰 평안이 우리에게 흘러 넘칠 것이다.

(10) 짧고 피상적인 기도’는 경건을 쇠퇴하게 만드는 원인이다. 신앙이 쇠퇴하면 ‘짧고 피상적인 기도’를 드리게 된다. 이런 기도는 하나님과 멀어지기 시작했다는 증거이며, 이런 기도가 계속되면 그 분과 더욱 멀어진다. 깊이 있는 기도를 할지라도 짧게 기도하는 사람은 오래 기도하는 훈련을 하여 그것에 익숙해져야 한다. 기도의 시간을 자꾸 늘리면 기적처럼 신앙이 다시 불붙는다.

(11) 기도는 하나님의 약속들이 우리의 삶 속에 적용되도록 문을 열어 주고, 그 적용 과정을 가로막는 방해물들을 제거해주며, 약속들을 작동시키고, 약속들의 아름다운 열매들을 확보해준다. 하나님의 약속들이 아브라함과 그의 후손들에게 주어졌지만, 많은 수태 못하는 배와 여러 작은 장애물들이 그 약속 성취를 방해했다. 그러나 기도는 모든 장애물을 제거하고, 약속을 위해 대로를 뚫고, 약속의 실현을 더욱 쉽고 빠르게 해주었다.

(12) 하나님의 뜻에 합한 기도는 능력을 발휘한다. 하나님의 뜻과 인간의 기도는 모든 강한 힘과 전능한 힘의 결합을 가져오기 때문이다. 기도는 하나님께서 우리의 일에 개입하시도록 하는 강력한 힘을 가지고 있다.

(13) 교회와 천사들은 이 땅의 성도들의 기도를 도와서 하늘과 땅에서 다양한 일들을 이루게 한다. 요한계시록에서 천사가 기도로 점화된 불을 취하여 땅에 쏟았을 때, “뇌성과 음성과 번개와 지진이” (8:5) 일어났다. 기도는 이 모든 놀랍고 소란스럽고 고통스러운 일들을 일으키는 힘이다.

(14) 기도에는 응답 받는 기도, 아직 응답 받지 못한 기도, 거부당한 기도 3 종류가 있다. 응답이 거부되는 기도는, 첫째, 악한 마음을 품은 사람들의 기도는 그 기도의 응답이 거부되었다 (시 66:18, 잠 1:28, 시 50:16). 거부된 이유는 기도하는 자들의 마음가짐이나 의도 때문이다. 우리의 야망에서 나오는 기도는 그 응답이 거부되는 것이 더 낫다. 마음속의 죄악과 대적하여 싸우지 않으면, 기도가 방해를 받는다. 어떤 종류의 죄라도 마음 속에 품고 기도를 할 수 없다. 어리석은 생각은 죄이다. 정욕으로 가득 찬 눈길을 쳐다보는 것은 죄이다. 우리는 깨끗한 마음으로 주님을 불러야 한다.

(15) 뜨거운 기도는 성령의 능력을 가져온다. 기도는 성령의 승리의 병거이다. 기도하지 않으면 성령이 임하지 않으신다. 성령이 오셨다 할지라도 기도하지 않으면 성령의 능력의 불이 꺼지고 만다. 기도의 분위기가 있는 곳에는 강력한 죄의 자각이 일어난다. 회개의 역사가 일어난다.

(1) 사역자들은 고상한 직무를 감당하도록 하나님께 부름받은 자들로서, 하나님 백성의 상태에 대한 1차적인 책임을 져야 한다. 하나님께서 영적 이스라엘을 이 세상에서 이끌어 하늘 나라로 인도하는 사명을 사역자들에게 주셨다.

(2) 하나님의 공동체가 영적으로 얼마나 건강하고 부요한 가는 대개 사역자들에 의해 좌우된다. 사역자들은 하나님을 바라보고 하나님께 끊임없이 지혜와 도우심과 능력을 구해야 한다. 하나님의 위대한 일은 기도로써 이루어져야 한다.

(3) 사역자가 갖추어야 할 최고의 무기는 기도의 불병거이다. 그는 ‘기도전문가’가 되어야 한다. 기도하지 않는 사역자는 사역자가 아니다. 기도하지 아는 사역자는 애당초 자기의 사명을 잘못 알았거나, 아니면 사역자로 부르신 하나님께 실망과 슬픔을 안겨드리는 것이다. 사역자는 다른 모든 재능이나 자질보다 우선되어야 할 것이 기도이다.

(4) 초기 감리교 설교자들이 놀라운 성공을 거둘 수 있었던 것은, 하나님께 말씀 드리는 기술을 알았기 때문이다. 그들은 학식이 많은 사람들이 결코 아니었고, 여러가지 한계가 있었지만, 기도를 열심히 했기 때문에 하나님의 큰 일을 이룰 수 있었다. “기도 골방에서 쟁기질을 열심히 하지 않은 사람은 아무 것도 추수하지 못한다.”

(5) 복음전파에서 가장 중요한 요소는 기도이다. 마르틴 루터는 “그리스도인의 직업은 기도하는 것이다.” 라고 말했다. 예수님은 두 가지 기술을 배우셨는데, 하나는 ‘목수의 기술’ 이었고, 또 하나는 ‘기도의 기술’ 이었다. 기도의 기술을 잘 배운 사람은 그리스도인으로서 일하는 비법을 잘 터득한 것이므로, 하나님의 일 터에서 숙련공이 된다.

(6) “쉬지 말고 기도하라.”는 이 시대의 사역자들에게 떨어진 지상명령이다. 무릎 꿇고 기도하고 말씀을 준비한다면, 은혜로운 성령께서 폭포수처럼 말씀에 임할 것이다.

(7) 제자들이 성령을 받은 사건을 요한은 “너희는 거룩하신 자에게서 ‘기름부음을 받고” (요일 2:20) 라고 말한다. 사역자들이 진실한 마음으로 간절히 사모해야 할 것이 이 ‘거룩한 기름부음’ 이다.

(8) 기도 없는 부흥은 사상누각이다. 부흥은 일정 기간 동안 진정한 기도를 드린 후에 찾아 온다. 성령님이 주시는 부흥은 ‘설교단과 청중석’ 에서 함께 일어나며, 하나님의 뜻에 따라 일하는 사역자와 평신도 모두에게 점점 확대된다.

(9) 예수님은 기도에 강한 3사람을 ‘다른 제자들’ 로부터 따로 구분하셨다. 이 3명의 제자는 기도에 더 관심을 기울였던 베드로와 야고보와 요한 이었다. 이들은 다른 제자들보다 더 많이 기도를 하였다.

(10) 신앙생활의 최고의 경지에 이르려면, 기도가 필수적이다. 하나님께서는 기도하는 사람에게 성령을 통하여 자신의 것들을 드러내신다. 하나님의 나라가 이 세상에서 견고하고 힘 있게 세워지려면, 반드시 기도가 있어야 한다. 초대교회의 최초의 사역자들 (사도들)은 기도사역에 힘을 쏟았다.

(11) 오직 기도할 때 설교자들의 설교에 능력과 찌르는 힘이 생겨 청중에게 유일을 끼칠 수 있다. 이사야 선지자가 하나님 보좌 앞에서 기다리며 고백하고 기도했을 때, 천사가 ‘단에서 취한 핀 숯’을 그의 입술에 대었다.

(12) 기도하면 언제나 활활 타는 불이 임한다. 이 불은 딱딱하게 굳어버린 혀를 풀어주고, 복음 증거의 입을 열어주며, 선행의 큰 문을 활짝 열어준다.

(1) 하나님께서 이 세상을 다스리신다는 것을 결코 잊어서는 안 된다.  무슨 일이 일어나든지 거기에는 반드시 하나님께서 함께 하신다. 하나님께서는 기도를 통해 교회를 다스리듯이 또한 세상을 다스리신다.

(2) 하나님께서 인류를 다스실 때 가장 중요하게 여기시는 것이 바로 기도이다. 기도는 인간이 할 수 있는 행동들 중 가장 중요한 것이다. 기도에 실패한 사람은 의무 수행, 봉사, 영적 성장에서 모두 실패한다. 하나님께서 인간을 도우시는 방법이 바로 기도이기 때문이다. 기도하지 않는 사람은 하나님의 도우심을 거절하는 것이다. 그 분께 기도 드리지 않으면 하나님을 사랑하는 마음이 생기지 않는다. 기도하지 않으면 역동적인 힘들이 시들어서 결국 죽고 만다. 그리스도인으로서의 미덕이 존재하고 꽃을 피우고 열매를 맺기 위해서는 반드시 기도가 있어야 한다.

(3) 개인 경건보다 더 숭고한 가치 실현을 위해 기도가 반드시 필요하다. 우리가 기도하면 하나님께서 일하기 시작하신다. 하나님은 자신의 목적과 계획이 우리의 기도를 통해 이루어지도록 정하셨다. 역사적으로 살펴보더라도 사람들이 기도했을 때 하나님께서 개입하시어 큰 일을 이루셨다.

(4) 따라서, 기도는 하나님 일을 체크하는 하나의 수단이 된다. 즉 어떤 일이 일어나고 있을 때, 하나님의 일인지 아닌지를 판단할 수 있는 확실한 시금석은 그 일을 추진하는 사람들이 열심히 기도하느냐 그렇지 않느냐 하는 것이다. 사람들이 기도의 강력한 힘, 곧 기도의 불병거를 사용한다면 하나님께서는 그들의 일에 지극히 크신 능력과 복을 넘치도록 부어주신다.

(5) 아들을 달라는 간구한 한나처럼 간절히 기도하는 여자들의 간구를 통해, 사무엘 같은 신앙의 위인들이 나타나 하나님의 일을 이룰 수 있다. 이런 여자들은 세상의 모든 정치가들보다 교회와 세상에 더 많은 유익을 끼치는 것이다. 부모의 기도 가운데 태어난 사람들은 위기에 빠진 국가를 구할 수 있다.

(6) 교회가 기도하면 하나님의 일이 흥하고 이 땅에서 하나님 나라가 승리한다. 그러나 교회가 기도하지 않으면 하나님의 일은 쇠퇴하고 온갖 악이 만연하게 된다. 하나님은 기도라는 통로를 통해 영적 번영이 찾아 오도록 정하셨다.

(7) 기도를 거부하는 것은 하나님을 거부하는 것과 마찬가지이다. 기도는 하나님께서 일하시도록 하고, 천사들이 일하도록 하고, 사람들이 일하도록 한다. 기도의 손길은 하나님께도 전달되고, 천사들에게도 전달되고, 사람들에게도 전달된다.

(8) 하나님께서는 기도의 법에 스스로 복종하시기 때문에 자신이 정하신 바에 따라 사람들 가운데서 일하지 않을 수 없다. 기도는 하나님을 붙들고 하나님께서 일하시도록 그 분께 영향력을 행사한다.

(9) 하나님의 능력을 가장 많이 사용할 수 있는 방법은 바로 기도이다. 하나님의 계획을 성취하는 데 가장 많이 공헌하는 것 역시 기도이다. 기도가 약해지면 이 땅에서의 그리스도의 능력이 약화되었고, 예수님의 영광스러운 통치의 결과가 더디 나타났으며, 하나님께서는 자신의 주권적 능력을 베풀지 않으셨다.

(10) 하나님과 사람이 인격적인 관계를 맺을 때, 그 수단으로 사용되도록 하나님께서 정하신 것이 바로 기도이다. 스스로 정하신 법에 따라 하나님께서는 사람의 기도를 들으실 수밖에 없다.

(11) 기도하지 않는 사람들은 하나님의 약속이 이 땅에서 이루어지는 것을 방해한다. 기도 하는 사람들은 하나님을 돕지만, 기도하지 않는 사람들은 하나님을 방해한다.

(12) 공중에 나는 새들도 기도의 법에 굴복한다. 하나님은 엘리야를 그릿 시냇가로 보내시면서, “그 시냇물을 마시라 내가 까마귀들을 명하여 거기서 머를 먹이게 하리라” (왕상 17:4). “까마귀들이 아침에도 떡과 고기를, 저녁에도 떡과 고기를 가져왔다” (왕상 17:6). 엘리야가 기도했을 때 하나님께서는 공중의 새들을 시켜서 그에게 음식을 공급해 주셨다.

(13) 하나님의 일을 할 수 있는 활력과 정력과 동력은 오직 기도의 사람에게서만 나온다. 예수 그리스도는 자신의 교회의 운명을 기도하는 사람들에게 맡기셨다. 사도들은 무엇보다도 기도의 사람들이었다. 사도들은 기도에 전념하였으며, 기도를 가장 중요한 일로 삼았다. 하나님께서는 하나님 나라의 중요한 일들을 기도하지 않는 사람들에게 맡기지 않으셨고, 앞으로도 그러하실 것이다. 그런 사람들의 삶에서는 기도가 주도적 역할을 하지 못하기 때문이다.

(14) 하나님의 말씀의 씨가 자라려면 기도의 영양분이 듬뿍 제공되어야 한다. 기도의 영양분을 충분히 섭취할 때, 말씀의 씨는 더욱 빨리 자라고, 그 뿌리는 더욱 깊이 박힌다.

(15) 하나님의 일을 능히 감당한 위대한 모든 지도자들은 골방에서 기도의 씨름을 하는 중에 그들의 지도력을 쌓았다.

(16) 교회 지도자들은 기도의 사람이어야 한다. 기도가 그들의 인격을 형상해야 하고, 기도가 그들의 가장 뚜렷한 특징이 되어야 한다. 교회의 힘은 탁월한 기도의 모범을 보이는 교회 지도자들에게서 나온다. 그들은 기도에 푹 빠진 사람들이 되어야 한다, 기도가 그들의 삶을 형성하고 지배해야 하며, 그들의 마음과 생활이 기도로 꽉 차 있어야 한다.

(1) 어떤 시대든지 간에 교회를 지켜 하나님께 영광을 돌린 사람들은 기도 사역에 철저했다. 교양이나 지성 같은 선천적 혹은 인간적인 능력이 뛰어난 사람들, 학식이나 선천적인 재능이 변변치 못한 사람들, 모두가 기도의 능력으로 교회를 이끌었다.

(2) 인생사에서 기도를 두 번째로 끌어 내리는 것은 하나님을 두 번째로 끌어내는 것과 다를 바 없다. 기도하지 않고 대신 다른 방법들을 사용하려는 것은 하나님을 이 세상에서 물러 나시게 하고, 인간의 힘으로 문제를 해결하려는 것이다.

(3) 하나님의 일을 제대로 수행하려면 반드시 기도해야 한다. 하나님께서 그렇게 정하셨다. 사도행전 6:4절, “우리는 기도하는 것과 말씀 전하는 것을 전무하리라”. 사도들은 말씀이 제대로 전파되고 교회가 성장하려면 기도에 전념해야 한다는 것을 분명히 알았다. 일을 위해 기도를 포기하는 것보다 기도를 위해 일을 포기하는 것이 낫다. 기도를 얼마나 세게 하느냐에 따라 일의 가치가 결정된다.

(4) 일 때문에 바쁘다는 핑계로 기도하지 않으면 신앙이 침체에 빠질 뿐만 아니라, 일 자체도 망쳐버린다. 왜냐하면 기도가 없는 일에는 하나님께서 함께 하시지 않기 때문이다. 사탄의 교활한 간계에 넘어가 기도 시간을 줄이고 일하는 시간을 늘린 사람들이 얼마나 많은가! 우리가 너무 바빠서 더 이상 기도하지 못하게 되었다면, 우리는 사탄에게 너무나 손쉽게 무장해제를 당한 것이다.

(5) 기도가 뒷받침되지 않는 말씀 전파는 무용지물이다. 사도들이 기도하지 않았다면 그들의 사역도 지속될 수 없었을 것이다.

(6) 말씀 전파에서 큰 성공을 거두려면 기도를 많이 해야 한다. 하나님께서 강한 팔로 들어 사용하시는 설교자는 기도하는 설교자이다.

(7) 사도행전 6:1-7 기록에 의하면, 사도들이 몇 가지 일에 얽매어 기도에 전념하지 못했기 때문에 사도로서의 능력을 잃어가고 있다고 스스로 느꼈다. 사도들은 자신들이 교회 재정문제에 너무 신경을 쓰고 있다는 것을 깨달았다. 문제의 원인을 발견한 사도들은 기도생활을 방해하는 재정 사역을 다른 사람들에게 맡기고 자기들은 기도에 전념하기로 결심하였다.

(8) 사도들이 다른 어떤 일보다 기도를 가장 앞세웠을 때 비로소 그들은 이 세상에서 하나님의 뜻을 진정으로 행하는 자들이 될 수 있었고, 하나님은 그들을 통해 효과적으로 일하실 수 있었다.

(9) 가정에서의 기도가 무너진 가장 큰 이유는 바쁘다는 핑계로 기도하지 않았기 때문이다. 이것이 가정의 경건이 무너지고 교회의 기도가 쇠퇴하는 원인이다.
